Gutter Choices: K-Style vs. Half-Round

Gutters protect your home from water damage by directing rain and snowmelt to the downspouts and into a drain away from your home. Without gutters, your basement would probably be flooded and different parts of your home can be damaged by moisture.

The damage is usually more expensive to repair down the line than the cost of new gutters to replace broken, missing, or leaky ones. There are a few gutter styles to choose from, including half-round and K-style gutters. Here is a comparison to help you choose which one would best suit your needs.

Half-Round Gutters

Half-round gutters look similar to a pipe that’s been cut in half. They are the perfect choice for homes with rounded roof lines. Many homes built prior to the 1950s have such roof lines. Some modern homeowners prefer that look, as well.

Half-round gutters don’t have sharp corners or depressions where debris can gather, so they are usually more reliable in preventing clogs. They have a classic appeal that’s popular among homeowners who prefer the styles of an earlier era. Copper and steel variants are available too.

Half-round gutters have the edge over K-style types in terms of beauty and resistance to clogging and corrosion.

K-Style Gutters

K-style gutters are the default choice when it comes to modern homes. They take their design cue from the colonial crown molding. Roofing professionals like how K-style gutters look and they work well when installed on angled roofs.

Available in pre-cut sizes, these gutters are flat on the side that attaches to the home, making them easier to install than half-round gutters. K-style gutters typically cost less than half-round gutters.

Whichever gutter style you choose, your gutter contractor can help you ensure they work for your home. Chase Roofing LLC works with both types of gutter. We are also a GAF Master Elite® roofer.
